Are you hitting your Upper Limit? Do you ever feel that you have a higher level of untapped potential, but just can’t seem to figure out how to get there – let alone figure what that next level even looks like?

In the book, The Big Leap, Gay Hendrick’s writes that we have an “upper thermostat setting” that determines how much love, success, and creativity we allow ourselves to enjoy. And when we exceed that setting, we often do something to sabotage ourselves. Allowing us to drop back into our comfort zone where we feel safe.

I did exactly that recently. I had finally decided to take action on a  big dream of mine that I have been sitting on for 3 years. Leading transformational retreats for women in the wilderness.

I had about a million questions about the logistics of these retreats – do I partner with a guide company? How will we plan meals? What if someone gets altitude sickness? How do I guarantee that the women have the experience they want to have? So I turned to my husband, Brian, who has been a professional outdoor guide for over 25 years. I shared my concerns with him, and he started giving me advice.

But instead of asking questions and taking notes, I ended up picking a fight with him. And the conversation spiraled from there. After we had some time to cool off and apologize, I was able to see that I was overwhelmed by the fear.  I got scared when I started to think about what it would be like for me to step into my next level, and I sabotaged the conversation.

Have you ever caught yourself in a situation like this? You start to take action on a dream and then you do something to destroy it before you can even build any momentum?

So how do you stop sabotaging yourself so you can bust through to your next level? Gay suggests following these steps:

  1. Notice the worry thoughts that are coming up – whether they seem related to things you want to achieve or not.
  2. Let go of the worry thoughts, and shift your focus away from them.
  3. Wonder: what positive new thing is trying to come through?

When you release your grip on the worry, it allows something more positive to emerge. The inspiration you need to step into that next level. Or an idea that’s forming that will lead you to greatness.

Teaching my clients to become aware of their thoughts and shift them is such an important part of the work that I do. We help you create an inner environment where you stop sabotaging yourself and start taking action toward those BIG goals.
